A full phone is slow and annoying. These eight steps clear space safely and keep your photos, contacts and chats protected.

Phone storage full? Eight ways to free up space without losing what matters

A phone with no free storage freezes, refuses to take photos and fails to install updates. Before you delete things at random, follow a simple order that frees the most space with the least regret.

1. Check what is using the space

Open your phone's storage settings. It shows how much space is used by apps, photos, videos and "other" files. Start with the biggest category.

2. Back up your photos and videos

Copy them to cloud storage, a computer or a memory card. Once you confirm they are safely saved and you can open them from the backup, you can delete the originals from the phone.

3. Clear messaging app media

Chat apps quietly save every photo, voice note and video you receive. Open the app's storage settings and clear large files from groups you no longer need. Switch off automatic media download for groups.

4. Remove apps you do not use

Uninstall games and apps you have not opened in months. You can install them again later if needed, and removing them often frees hundreds of megabytes.

5. Clear app caches

Cache files are temporary data that apps store to load faster. Clearing them is safe and can free space, although apps may open slightly slower the first time afterwards.

6. Delete duplicate and blurry photos

Screenshots, memes and repeated shots add up. Review them once a month and keep only what you want.

7. Clear your downloads folder

Old documents, installation files and forwarded videos tend to pile up there. Move what you need to a computer or cloud storage and delete the rest.

8. Use a memory card or cloud storage

If your phone supports a memory card, store photos and music there. Otherwise, a cloud service gives you more room, though free plans are limited.

What not to delete

Do not delete files you do not recognise in system folders, and do not remove an app's data if it holds important records, such as a banking app or notes you have not backed up.

A monthly habit

Set a reminder for the last day of each month to back up and tidy up. Five minutes of cleaning each month prevents the "storage full" panic at the worst time, like when you are about to take an important photo or receive an urgent file.
