Why you should separate business money from personal money

Mixing money makes it impossible to know whether your business really makes a profit. Here is how to separate it simply.

Why you should separate business money from personal money

Many small business owners use one pocket for everything. Sales come in, family needs go out and school fees and stock get paid from the same cash. It feels easy, but it hides the most important number in your business: whether you are making a profit.

What goes wrong when money is mixed

  • You cannot tell if the business is growing or shrinking.
  • You spend business capital on personal needs without noticing.
  • You may think you are earning well while stock slowly disappears.
  • Lenders, partners and customers find it hard to trust unclear records.

The simple fix

  1. Open a separate account for the business, if possible. Many banks offer low-cost accounts. If not, use a separate wallet or a clearly labelled envelope.
  2. Pay all business income into it and pay all business costs from it.
  3. Pay yourself a fixed amount at regular times, such as weekly or monthly. This is your salary from the business.
  4. Keep personal spending out of the business account.

Decide your "salary"

Look at the profit your business makes in a normal month and decide a safe amount to take. Leave the rest in the business to buy stock, repair equipment or cover slow periods. If you take more than the business earns, you are slowly eating your capital.

Keep a basic record

Write down each sale and each expense, with the date and a short note. At the end of the month, add them up:

  • Total sales minus total costs equals your profit.

You can use a notebook, a spreadsheet or an app.

Use a small emergency reserve

Set aside part of your profit into a reserve for slow weeks, repairs or price increases. Even ₦1,000 a week builds a cushion over time.

Treat family loans seriously

If you borrow from the business for a personal need, write it down and repay it. If friends or relatives ask for goods on credit, record the amount and the date so your stock does not vanish without explanation.

Benefits you will notice

You will know your real profit, make better decisions, feel less stress and be ready if you want a loan, a partner or a bigger shop.

Start today

You do not need fancy software. A notebook, a separate wallet and the discipline to pay yourself a set amount are enough to start.
