Read articleAn emergency fund protects you from borrowing in a crisis. Here is how to start small and build it steadily.

An emergency fund is money set aside for unexpected events: a medical bill, a repair, a sudden loss of income or a delayed payment. Without one, a small crisis often leads to borrowing at high cost or selling something you need. With one, you can handle problems calmly.
Many people never start because the goal seems too big. Choose an amount you will not miss, even ₦1,000 a week. In a year, that is ₦52,000. Increase it when your income grows.
Keep the money separate from your daily spending account, so you are not tempted to use it. Good options include a dedicated savings account, a locked savings feature in a trusted app or a regulated cooperative. Make sure it is easy enough to reach in a true emergency, but not so easy that you dip into it for small wants.
Set up a standing order or a reminder to move the money on the same day each week, ideally right after you are paid. Treat it like a bill you owe yourself.
Celebrate each stage, then keep going.
A real emergency is unexpected, necessary and urgent: a medical need, a vital repair or a loss of income. Sales, parties and gadgets are not emergencies. If you use the fund, rebuild it as soon as you can.
Do not keep the money as cash at home or with a person you cannot fully trust. Avoid schemes that promise very high returns, since they often put your savings at risk. Savings are for safety first, not for gambling.
People with even a small cushion make better decisions. They do not panic, they borrow less and they sleep better. Starting with ₦1,000 this week is a real step toward financial security.
